Tell us about yourself. When did you get started? What led you to start your own business?

My name is Christy. I’ve always done some kind of creative hobby like sewing, knitting, or ceramics. I started working with polymer clay in 2021 because I was curious after I bought a pair of floral polymer clay earrings. When I started looking into how I could make them myself I stumbled upon some videos from miniature artists and I was hooked. Decided to start selling my work after a lot of encouragement from coworkers and friends.

Where do you get the inspiration for your designs?

Fortunately food inspiration is plentiful. I get a lot of ideas from food accounts I discover on Instagram and Pinterest.

How would you describe the art you make? What is your signature style or technique?

I try to make my pieces as realistic as I possibly can. I love it when I hear someone thought my post was a food account. I also want my earrings stylish and to catch your attention when they are worn so someone is drawn in to take a closer look.

What is your most successful design?

I would say my French Toast earrings were my most successful design. Not because I sold a ton of them, I only made one pair. But more importantly, I think I found my style when I finished them. I’m most proud of them.

What is your favorite design you’ve ever made?

Probably my charcuterie earrings. I love making charcuterie earrings even though they are so time consuming. There are so many different pieces to make so I get to try so many different techniques when making them. Every component is handmade. My husband cuts out the wood boards on a scroll saw and I sand and stain them. I made the resin syrup pitcher on the brunch charcuterie earrings from a resin mold. All the bowls are hand-sculpted from polymer clay. Lots of techniques and mediums are being utilized.

What is your favorite type/brand of clay and inks to work with?

Sculpey Soufflé and Premo. I also like Cernit for making bowls and plates but it is harder to get.

What is your favorite tool or material right now?

My favorite tool is my magnifying glass. It’s a necessity.

Do you sell your products on more than one platform? Where do you get most of your sales from?

I sell in my Etsy shop and at markets. I think markets are most successful not just in terms of sales. Despite being an introvert I really find it rewarding to talk with my customers and it’s especially gratifying to see and hear their reactions when they realize what I’m selling. It encourages me to keep at it.

What are your main goals for the business? What do you wish to accomplish in the coming months or years?

I’m focusing on prioritizing, getting organized, and providing enjoyable content for my IG following. I’m a nurse by day and have two jobs so it’s important for this to remain fun and a creative outlet. I’m excited to create new designs and explore new techniques so I’m trying to prioritize taking time to do just that.

I finally created a spreadsheet to track sales and expenses. Actually, haha, let’s be honest, my husband did that, now I have to maintain it. Lastly, I’m always trying to think of fun ways to share my craft with others so I’m working towards being more consistent using social media and participating in local events.

Who are your favorite accounts that others should follow?

There are so many fantastic accounts it’s hard to just name a few. If you are interested in learning about making miniatures I would definitely recommend @rina_vellichor, @maiveferrando, @sweetminidollhouse and @sugarcharmshop. I learned so much from watching their YouTube channels and @maiveferrando has a wonderful book about making miniature cakes.

Food accounts like @barleyandsage, @sweetkitchencooking, and @hala_shares have beautifully styled photos that provide a ton of inspiration.

My go to accounts for tips on all things polymer clay are @thebluebottletree and @roclayco.
